WineVIP: Bodegas Piqueras
Founded in 1915 by Mario Bonete, Almansa is in the southeastern part of Spain where the calcareous soil, sun, and dry climate are ideal for grape growing, particularly Tempranillo, Monastrell, and Garancha Tintorera which are indigenous the region. In 1961, Piqueras was the first winery in the region to invest in oak barrels, buying a hundred, 300 litre oak casks – very daring for its time, but symbolic in their commitment to producing the right wine with the right character. Because the local annual rainfall is low, it results in low yielding, slow ripening vines of excellent concentrated quality.
Juan Pablo Bonete took over as winemaker and proprietor, after studying oenology and working closely alongside his father. His objective: to produce quality wines in limited quantities. Today, their wine is found in 17 countries, and only now has become available in the USA, exclusively through WineVIP.
The bodega’s wine production is organised in four well defined ranges. In Bonete's words: “We try to adapt to the idiosyncrasy of each market, in the varieties as well as in the design of labels and bottles”. ‘Castillo de Almansa’ is made up of five reds, a rosé and a white. The reds, which are all Crianzas, are all made from coupages of various grape varieties except one, which is a single-varietal made from Garnacha Tintorera.
After an almost one-hundred-year lifespan, Bodegas Piqueras is still a family-run business, where Juan Pablo Bonete and his brothers, Ángel and Luis are committed to making limited-edition fine wines.
